Ryzenberg On: Vintage Wonderland

I guess it was one of those ‘love at first sight moments.’ I was walking on Valencia Street in the Mission, aimlessly looking for the newest and best until, long and behold, I sport a Clare Vivier bag in the window of a recently opened shop.

If you’ve either met me or read the dog-and-pony-show for a bit, you know Clare’s creations are on top of my sartorialisms and coveteables. This LA-based designer knows her way around leather and creates colorful, timeless designs that are versatile and divine. I have two clutches and so far, they have gone with me around the country and I am sure more adventures are afloat.

Soon after, I knew that was a sign. I had to go into the store and see what other marvels were in stock, and boy, was I lucky. Tucked inside a vintage boutique, Schatzi is decorator’s paradise filled with vintage one-of-a-kind pieces and antique delights.

I chatted with the owners Kevin and Charles for a few hours about what prompted opening such a ‘local gem.’ Both of these lads have extensive design backgrounds and are avid collectors, so after years of amassing beautiful pieces, they felt it was time to give them another home. They thought the back of the vintage shop Schauplatz was pretty perfect for their venture.

I am telling you, these pictures do not do the actual place any justice. You will be transformed to a different time, like a beautiful 1980s home or a hideaway in Palm Springs. Each vignette is carefully conceptualized and executed by Charles and Kevin, and they feature pieces found all over the country in flea markets, estate sales and simple hunts. As for the prices, there are plenty of pieces sure to satisfy those opting frugal finds, and event those that are ready to splurge.

Next time you are strolling by your favorite neighborhood, if a window display catches your eye, do not hesitate to see what’s all about. Not only did I walk away with a new store to rave about, I also made new friends but I look forward to bringing all of my decorista pals for a visit.

First Glance: You had me at Clare Vivier on the window.

Roosters, Glam and Flowers: One of the many displays Charles and Kevin create. In fact, they normally change every 2-3 days.

Neon, Neon: Nice combination of traditional and modern — believe me, it all works.

One man’s trash is another…..: Well, I could say all the pieces here are indeed treasures!

Cookie Time: I may (or may not) have taken this home….

The Masterminds: Charles (left) and Kevin (right) are putting their heart and soul into this new adventure. You can tell by listening to their enthusiastic tales or simply by browsing through all the timeless treasures.

Ryzenberg On: Leave Your Footprint

Shoeaholics this one is for you! Freda Salvador, the brain child of Megan Papay and Cristina Palomo, finally opened their little piece of paradise in the Marina.

This concept store, which for most footwear aficionados will be like shan-grila, has worldwide inspirations, a nifty coffee machine and even candy sure to satisfy anyone’s sweet craving!

When I set foot on this locale, I was immediately transported on a vacation. Every corner offers something different, whether it’s the seats from an old music venue, some classic photos of none other than Frida Kahlo and of course THE SHOES! They are all handmade and perfect for the hills of San Francisco.

They have an array of Oxfords (the must have shoe for spring,) booties and of course loafers in a variety of colors.

Ryzenberg On: Sinful Weekend & Gluttony

Hola Hola! I got a serious case of the Mondays today, since it’s cold, gloomy and I’ve been up running errands and in meetings all morning.

So here is the deal — I ate all weekend (no joke)! I know most people enjoyed libations with 50 shades of green, but moi, I spent Saturday and Sunday eating pastries, cream puffs and a delicious gourmet BBQ.

Check out some of the delights my friend Laura Athuil baked for her soiree. I must say, after eating nearly a dozen of these confections, it felt like I found a pot of gold (more like a pot de creme of gold!)

So because of the overeating extravaganza of the weekend, this is what I feel like wearing today. For obvious reasons (perhaps the fact I can rarely fit into anything) I am not posting any personal style photos, but rather inspiration.

Post food coma style: boyfriend jeans, slouchy sweater and, of course, pumps.

Hope your weekend was fun, memorable and filled with green!

Ryzenberg On: Layering (California Style)

Winter had a bit of a hiatus in SF, but the chills (and rain) are back and in full force! What’s the key to chic winter style in the city by the bay? Layering.

Known for its micro climates, some neighborhoods are cool and foggy (I am talking to you, Sunset District), while others tend to be a bit milder (Mission, Noe), so because of this fickleness, it is vital to be prepared, no matter what corner you are destined to wander on.

My take on how to keep warm with a colorful twist right from my backyard (literally) Alamo Square.

image

Always have a scarf, boots and tights — These pieces are a must for any season in San Francisco. Always try to add a subtle pop of color and in this case, I made the oversized cardigan stand out.

Sunnies are basic —  I mean, it is California after all!

These boots are Made for walking — Riding boots are practical and stylish, especially in a city known for its hills and steep streets. I like to layer them with knee high socks so my gams are elongated and warm.

Ryzenberg On: DYI Tea Time

Some of my favorite boutiques in San Francisco have creative events that keep me coming back for more. This time it was Marmalade a lovely gem in the middle of busy Union Street.

The gals at the store got their inspiration for their latest visuals from one of London’s most charming traditions — the tea party and I must say that their window is quite whimsical.

This is where fashionista Alice would go for a tea patter (and bring the Mad Hatter along)

Instructions are always key and they came in handy for me!

Lot’s of great colors and fancy ways to get crafty.

Such a fun and easy project putting together tea bags! Such a fun project to do with the little ones too.

Thanks to the marmaladies for having all of us at the store, and count me in for the next event! Also, some of the gals took advantage of the 20 percent off store-wide deals, since they sell unique brands and support local and emerging designers.

Ryzenberg On: For the Love of E-Commerce

As you all know, I am constantly on the hunt for incredible local shops and e-commerce sites, so when I found Cuyana (which means ‘to love’ in Quechua) while working for the Stanford Graduate School of Business, I immediately contacted them. After checking out their site and adding a few items to a wish list (hint, hint), I had to learn more about the line. You can say it was love at first ‘click!’

It turns out one of their founders, Karla Gallardo, is a fellow South American hailing from my northern neighbor Ecuador. Of course, I knew this was almost serendipitous and decided to go ahead and ask her team members a few things inquiring minds would want to know.

Grab your passport, you are about to go on a shopping journey!

Ryzenberg On: What inspired Cuyana? Where did you get the idea from?

Cuyana: For me, it came from my passions and experiences growing up in Ecuador, where I witnessed the extreme disparity between rich and poor. But Ecuador, like most developing nations, does not lack resources, but leadership and opportunity. I created Cuyana to empower my country, and others like Ecuador, to use their skills toward making high quality products.

In the fashion world, you have to pay a very large price to buy luxury fashion items, when the cost is inflated by the process, including all of the middlemen. The mission of Cuyana is to clean up a lot of the supply chain and create a brand where we don’t need to charge huge markups. There is a lot of excess capacity with producers who used to work for luxury brands, like Valentino, Ralph Lauren and Lacoste, brands that have moved production to other countries. Cuyana brings jobs back to these craftsmen. That, coupled with selling only online, lets us to avoid those markups. Cuyana is creating a new category of products that are high quality at great prices.

Ryzenberg On: How do you pick the countries to do business with?

Cuyana: We start by developing collections around fabrics and materials. We seek the countries that are experts in those materials. These countries have long traditions and have developed micro industries around those materials because they have been worked on for generations in those areas. It is about discovering where the best materials are and what country specializes in them.

Ryzenberg On: Who is the perfect Cuyana customer?

Cuyana: Cuyana invites all women to participate in fashion. The Cuyana woman cares about quality and where and how her products are made. She wants timeless classics with a modern twist. She seeks pieces that will live in her wardrobe and be passed down to her daughter. We have seen this with our customers and have found that our products span generations. They are the special pieces that fit a range of women, and are often shared between mothers and daughters as well. It’s very special in that way.

Ryzenberg On: Is there one specific piece from any of the collections that you absolutely love?

Cuyana: I love pieces from every collection! The Alpaca scarf is definitely at the top of the list since it is a perfect example of the Cuyana brand. It is smartly designed and leverages premium materials. It is feminine and not too basic, and makes women of all ages feel beautiful. It’s a customer favorite! It’s one of my favorite travel items; it keeps me warm on the plane. I am proud that we are able to offer it at $65, where other brands charge over $200 for the same item. It is so soft!

Above: This Leather Tote is perfect for running errands, traveling and carrying all your precious cargo!

Cuyana donates some of their profits to charity: water. What motivated you to do that?

Giving back has always been important to me. I wanted to create an inviting fashion brand that is accessible on multiple levels. Through Cuyana, I wanted to bring fashion to people, so they feel they are welcome to come and shop. I also wanted to create a brand that gives back to micro industries and through charity: water. That way, we are closing loop in a nice way to create a brand that does good in every sense: We are transparent, we provide high quality and fair prices, and we give back to the communities that work on our products.

Is there a personal story behind picking any of the countries that have collections?

I started my first collection in Ecuador, my home country. It is known for the popular Panama Hats. We introduced the Cuyana version of the Panama Hat and it is now a best seller. It is now included in our permanent boutique.

Above: Cuyana Co-Founder Karla Gallardo sports a classic staple with a splash of color: The Leather Evening Bag

What are some timeless pieces every woman should have?

This is how we think of Cuyana. We think of what classic items a woman needs in her wardrobe. That is why we have a saddlebag, leather tote, evening bag and our best-selling canvas weekender, which are all essential bags for a woman to have. We also love the Alpaca scarf. It’s something to carry around with you no matter where you go, from travel to work to dinner.

What’s next for Cuyana? What countries are on the horizon?

We just held a Facebook campaign to ask our readers where we should travel in 2013. We want to continue to explore the world. There are great cashmere and wool fabrics coming out of the UK. Mexico continues to delight us with its color, embroidery, and ceramics. Turkey is similarly rich in art and textiles. Fan favorites were Morocco and Italy with its fabulous leather.

Ryzenberg On: Weekend Bliss

After a short week, I am ready for some R&R and ‘me’ time. I am using this weekend to enjoy the winter, some San Francisco staples (now that it’s finally dry) and using my time to reflect on new projects and ideas.

I am finally almost done with my pad, so I will be adding pictures of my humble abode in the coming weeks. It’s the little things that make me happy ans since I normally don’t bank on resolutions, so expect to see inspiring tidbits here.

What do you have planned? What are some of your resolutions?
